Social Network

Social networking sites have morphed into a mainstream medium for teens and adults. These sites encourage and enable people to exchange information about themselves, share pictures and videos, and use blogs and private messaging to communicate with friends, others who share interests, and sometimes even the world-at-large. And that's why it's important to be aware of the possible pitfalls that come with networking online.
Social networking sites have added a new factor to the "friends of friends" equation. By providing information about yourself and using blogs, chat rooms, email, or instant messaging, you can communicate, either within a limited community, or with the world at large. But while the sites can increase your circle of friends, they also can increase your exposure to people who have less-than-friendly intentions. You've heard the stories about people who were stalked by someone they met online, had their identity stolen, or had their computer hacked.

The Marriage Doctors

We live in a society where for centuries, marriage has been considered a sacred bond, one that is everlasting and unbreakable. Up until a few decades ago, the concept of divorce was an absolute taboo among certain social circles, and when a rare case of a broken marriage did surface, it became the talk of town--the unfortunate couple treated as social pariahs till the scandal blew over. However, we have come a long way, and have embraced modernity and incorporated it in every aspect of our lives, including our relationships.
Among the middle and the upper class especially, divorce is no longer considered an abominable sin, so much so, that the divorce rate has increased significantly in recent times. Contrary to popular belief, this is not because people no longer respect the sanctity of marriage, but because they view marriage differently than the generations before them.
"No one wants their marriage to end," says psychiatrist Dr M Omar Rahman, "There has been a shift in terms of what people expect from marriages. In the past, all that was necessary for a good marriage was a husband/ wife who was not abusive, a good father/mother and a husband who could provide for his family. Back then, they did not understand the concept of two people simply not relating to one another, not understanding eachother and making a connection and therefore being unhappy."
Expectations have changed, and more people are realising that they don't have to remain in an unhappy marriage, because they have options open to them. However, not all couples end their marriage before giving it some serious thought and effort. Nowadays, an increasing number of couples seek professional help before they make their final decision to part ways.

To Walk the Walk

Forrest Gump says, “Mama always said you could tell an awful lot about a person by the kind of shoes they wear.” And you actually can. There are many ways to be fashionable with your footwear and be comfortable at the same time, if you know what to look for.
"What becomes of the broken-hearted? They buy shoes!”- Mimi Pond, writer and cartoonist.
Summer brings out daring choices in shoes and as the heat hits the campus many students go berserk on what to wear and what not to wear. Shoes play a major role in this season. The dilemma itself is crazy - should I wear sneakers or should I just go for sandals? And then there is the mix and match dilemma - how to match your clothes with the right footwear. Like it says in the movie,Forrest Gump, “Mama always said you could tell an awful lot about a person by the kind of shoes they wear.” And you actually can. There are many ways to be fashionable with your footwear and comfortable at the same time, if you know what to look for.

Colourful footwear is 'in' this summer! Photo: Kazi Tahsin Agaz Apurbo
For students, sneakers are always the best choice for summer, because you never know when you need to be on the run, for the rain in Dhaka City is actually very unpredictable. Nowadays, a large number of brands are available in the city. Vans is the next best thing a student can wear to campus as well as casual hangouts. The best thing about vans is that you can wear it with almost anything, starting from jeans, shorts, skirts and what not. So yes, girls can wear them too! And colourful vans can look very funky on girls if pulled off right. If you are looking for cheap but cool and comfortable pairs of vans, then head out to Elephant Road and check out the variety of summer footwear, which are mostly worth less than Tk 1200. The shoes are reasonable and buying a couple of pairs would help you mix and match for the rest of the season.

The Rock 'n' Roller at School

Musician Raef Al Hasan Rafa

My earliest recollections from school all reside at Maple Leaf International School. My schooling began here and continued till my O'levels after which I joined European Standard School (ESS) for A'levels. Just a regular student, doing the regular things, I grew up loving Physics and History, and hating Math with sincerity. It is funny when I think about it now - the fact that my life now revolves around making music whereas none of my friends or I were into music until we were well into our high school years.
It was in Grade 7 that a friend lent me a mixed tape of rock and metal. Something changed then; I would listen, rewind and listen again. The music, what I now consider in all honesty, was just rubbish. It was food for my teenage soul and soon after, it was music that we would only talk about. I made my first big escapade from school at Grade 8 with a couple of friends. There was a concert nearby at Indian Cultural Centre, featuring all the big underground bands of that time- Aurthohin, Cryptic Fate and Artcell. That was the beginning of my music addiction and sneaky getaways to listen to it up close. Sadly, we were caught that day while we were returning from the venue, after having enjoyed to our heart's content. So caught up were we in this whole new world of music that had opened up without a warning that, classes were spent at the very back benches, with plans to have our own band. We did get around to it. We named the band, Psychokinesis. However, our precious little initiative gave in to the drama that teenage years are prone to. A few heated arguments broke the band. On a different note, we managed to remain great friends.
My brother, already a rock guitarist, introduced me to classic rock. He is the reason I grew interest in music, taking up the guitar and then the drum. I joined his band, Kraal and soon after, Aurthohin for the vocals. Life rolled faster; classes and jamming sessions had to be taken care of. I would be excused for missing a day of practice on special grounds, for I was still the school boy. I remember getting grounded at home after messing up my final results. My parents, of course, had no idea that I was living another life- the life of a rock n roll'er. I took take care hiding my face wearing caps for a live concert that I knew my parents were watching at home! It was after my A'levels that things at home got better; I was no longer grounded and my parents began to be supportive of my music. My teachers and friends at ESS liked what they heard from me. I received a certificate for singing from school. My Principal even agreed to let me keep my hair a little longer. I rode on the clouds that day!
It was in 2006 after I had created an advertising jingle that I began to take producing music seriously. After a few albums along the way, music as a career was just destiny. For now, I plan to study Music Production in United States.
Much has been said about education simply being a systematic route that all students follow - some denounce it, while others take it a little too seriously. I have always believed that questioning these systems around us never gets one anywhere. True that a proper education is a must, but ambitions should be pursued at the same time, and one should not be sacrificed for the other. Following the education route does not mean one has to give up one's ambition. It is, after all, the heart's calling.

Silly Tales

White Lie
Back in class VIII, we had a form master whose extraordinary over care would peeve us all. The only way to escape his scrutinising glare was to pretend to be "super studious" through white lies, covering lies and many more sorts of other lies. When the scholarship exam was knocking at the door, every night he used to call all the students of the form, one by one, to ask whether he/she was solving any question paper. One night, when he called me to ask the same pet question, I closed my eyes tightly & replied, "Of course sir, I s.s..solved a Bangla question paper tonight". God knows why I stammered half way through my response revealing the lie instantly. Then, to my dismay, I heard a deep sigh from the other end of the phone. After a long pause, my teacher said, "Ok, submit the copy tomorrow ". My jaws dropped, and I was too dumbfounded. I had to write for hours to prepare my copy. And when I had finished, it was 1:30 am. It was one of the repeated routine experiences of those days.

Pushing the new kid!
It all started in kindergarten. On a nice sunny day we all were roaming around in the school campus, some of us were playing and few were just trying to hide their food from me. On the other hand, I was in a very dull mood that day so I decided not to bully around and just relax somewhere peaceful. I went to my private lounge - the balcony. It was as though it was my very own territory where I could just sit alone and think. I was 6 back then, so all kinds of thoughts would go through my head. On that same day a new kid joined the school and sadly he knew very less about the class 'BOSS'. Wandering around the school, he decided to enter my territory. He came in like he didn't care who I was and looked down from the balcony and even before he could turn around I pushed him down. Later on my mom was called to come and pick me up. That was probably the last of my bullying days. And if you are thinking the kid's life was in grave danger, I would like to assure you it was nothing of that sort Our school was only a one storied building.

Going for the record!
Shaheen school students were and still are very big cricket enthusiasts. When I was a student I had my share of 'cricketing craze'. Playing cricket was like an excuse we never got bored of giving. There were times when we bunked our half yearly exams with the excuse of practicing for a school tournament. We had a record of bunking all the classes except one. It was the English class-- there were no excuses in the world that would satisfy our English teacher. So one day we decided to give it a shot and bunk her class. It all went really well for the first 40 minutes with the last 5 minute remaining. So we were only 5 minutes away from our new record of hiding in different places. Our last destination was behind the wall of a school toilet where we were sitting down and waiting for the bell to ring. cWe were waiting for one minute to pass when out of nowhere, a friend started screaming. When we looked at him we saw the teacher pulling him by his ear. Little did we know that we were hiding behind the teachers' toilet where our English teacher happened to be. A week of detention was the punishment afterwards.
